Donald Sterling: Racist or not, Freedom of Speech or not?

Historically, my problem with Donald Sterling has been his apathy for putting a good Clippers team on the court.  Spending the least on the team and just living off of the TV revenue.  Screw the fans, screw everyone, never showing up to any games until recently as he pretends to care now.  Too little to late, he lost my respect back in the 80s and never regained it.

Elgin Baylor long time General Manager sued Donald Sterling for racism.  The joke was no Owner would keep a General Manager who put a loosing team on the floor season after season and continue as GM.  Maybe it was charity, maybe it was convenient to have a poorly paid GM just to maximize his TV revenue.  Case dismissed.

Link to the Conversation with Donald Sterling and his Girlfriend (a woman named “V. Stiviano”) provided by TMZ Sports.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fthv5NmC6Fk  Here is text of key dialogue.

DS: “Why are you taking pictures with minorities?”  GF: “What wrong with minorities?”  later, GF:”And you’re in love with me.  And I’m black and Mexican.  Whether you like it or not.”

Later,  GF: “People call you and tell you that I have black people on my instagram and it bothers you.”  DS: “Yes it bothers me a lot that you want to promo…broadcast that you are associating with black people.  Do you have to?”  GF: “You associate with black people.”

Further,  GF: because of your upbringing? You want me to have hate towards black people?  DS: I don’t want you to have hate.  … I want you to love them – privately.  In your whole life, everyday you can be with them.  every single day of your life.”  GF:”But not in public?”  DS:”But why publicize it on the Instagram and why bring it to my games?  GF:”Why bring the black people to the games…”

More, GF:”I’m sorry that you still have people around you that are full of racism and hate in their heart.  I’m sorry that your’e still racist in your heart.  I’m sorry that you live in a world… (comment Donald does not deny this! )  DS: Now about your whole life, everyday, you could do whatever you want.  You can sleep with them, you can bring them in, you can do whatever you want.  The little I ask you is not to promote in that… and not to bring them to my games.  I’m just saying, in your lousy Instagrams you don’t have to have yourself with, walking with black people.  GF:”If it’s white people it’s OK?  (SILENCE) GF:”If it was Larry Bird, would it have made a difference?”

Near the end, GF:”I saw someone I admire.  I admire Magic Johnson… And I took a picture with someone I admire.” DS:”Good.  I think the fact that you admire him – I’ve know him well, and he should be admired.  And I’m just saying that it’s too bad you can’t admire him privately, …  You can do anything.  But don’t put him on an Instagram for the world to have to see so they have to call me.  And don’t bring him to my games. OK?”

Donald Sterling consistently belittles her throughout the discussion like she has done something wrong.  She is just asking questions to clarify what is the issue.  Donald belittles her to put her in her place, to shut her down and good for her she stands up to him and does not really take it.  She will probably be on the View soon, and other shows.

Should he be able to express his racist views without repercussion, Yes. It is called freedom of speech. Will it be without repercussion, remains to be seen.

It is better for a racist to communicate his racist views without repercussion so people know where they stand with them instead of everyone hiding their beliefs so you do not know who will gladly stab you in the back.  Political Correctness and hate crime laws has put the racists in the closet, not good.  As a youth every one used racist terms and no one was offended.  People believed in two sayings.  “Sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me.”  “I disagree with what you say but I will defend to the death your right to say it.”  Now, words are criminal, devastate emotionally people who have been treated like babies their entire lives, and freedom of speech is dead.

This could be the best thing to the Clippers organization since it was founded. Maybe the pressure will make him decide to sell the team to an owner who cares. Would be nice.  Maybe Magic Johnson has some money left in the bank?  Team name change, the Los Angeles Magics, no conflict.

Vince, Not ConVinced Mavericks win on game winning shot over Spurs, 2014/04/26

Spurs playing Mavericks Game 3, First Round, Spurs 1 seed against Mavs 8 seed. With 1.7 seconds left Vince Carter makes the game winning shot.  Dallas wins game 3 leads series 2-1.  No effing way did he get that shot off in time with 1.7 seconds left.
The clock most definitely must have started late.  On Slow Motion, The ball was passed into Vince, slight fumble, takes a step with his left foot, then right foot, then left foot, then right foot, holds shot so defender trying to block the shot goes by, shoots shot.  No effing way did that take 1.7 seconds.
May 13, 2004, Game 3,  Kobe made the game winning shot with 12 seconds left, Not.  Then Tim Duncan made the game winning shot with 0.4 of a second left, Not.  Then Derek Fisher makes the actual game winning shot with no time left.
“Whoever makes the last game winning shot wins the game.”

Howard: should I stay or should I go

There is only one way that Dwight Howard would stay with the Lakers and it seems that ship has passed.  If during the meetings this week Howard noticed that Coach D’antoni was absent and they told Howard we have someone we want to introduce to you and in comes Phil Jackson then I think Howard would stay.  Otherwise there is nothing for him here.  I know the Lakers will have complete cap room at the end of next season.  Yet, do you want to compete for a championship in the next few years or next season.  The Rockets seem to be the best choice.  Heck, that is where I would go.

I know no one wants to waste a season but there is a great draft next season so if the Lakers tanked next season I would be okay with that.  I hate it but will be okay with it.  Its time to build the team through the draft, and think free agents second.  Maybe we can pick up a few more picks with some trades.

Pacers blow game 1 against Heat 2013 playoffs

Indiana Pacers vs Miami Heat 5/22/2013 NBA Playoffs East Conference Finals Game 1

Frank Vogel blows it at the end.  He takes Roy Hibbert out at game end on two occasions so LeBron goes to the bucket twice to score winning baskets.

Especially, on the last play of the game with 2.2 seconds left.  Have Roy Hibbert on the court to go for a blocked shot.  Beforehand double team LeBron at the top of the key forcing him to pass or put up a tough jumper.  Sad to see the Pacers give it away.

Did the Lakers take out Kareem at game end, NO!  The Rockets Olajawon, NO!  The Lakers Shaq, NO!  The Sixers Moses, NO! On and on, Roy Hibbert is their best, he should be on the floor.

Kenny, Charles and Shaq say the coach made a good decision because Hibbert could not guard Bosh or Anderson.  Maybe not but who is going to get the ball at the end of the game, LeBron!  I would rather take my chances with another player over LeBron.

Kevin Durant on an Island against Memphis

On 5/7/2013 Memphis kicks butt in second game of the second round against the Thunder. What a close game end to end. Fisher played great with toughness and grit. Fisher scoring 19 is not a formula for victory. Where did Kevin Martin go tonight? The last game he had 25, tonight 6.  This game typified the importance of Russel Westbrook. Russel takes the pressure off of Durant and visa-versa and in turn makes it easier for their team mates.  Now, without Westbrook (and foolishly not signing Harden) you really see the quality of the team mates.

The game reminded me of the Spurs in the playoffs against Lebron in the 2007 finals. Every time Lebron got the ball he was double teamed. Cavaliers hoovered in 4 games. Durant at game end dealt with the same challenge. Memphis made the adjustment from the last game that if the Thunder will beat us in game 2 then it will have to be someone else other than Durant. So with a couple minutes left Durant got the double team with his team mates standing around, not filling passing lanes, not setting screens for Durant to get the ball easy, not helping. Durant was left ineffective.

LeBrand James, Why no commercials? Magic Johnson

Magic Johnson was commenting during halftime of the 5/5/2013 Pacers vs Knicks game on LeBron James getting the MVP award that LeBron is in no commercials. Chris Paul and Blake Griffin do more commercials than LeBron. Magic said LeBron should be doing more commercials than both because he is the best player and a four time MVP.

I think LeBron is a great player and may end up to be the best of all time, but what does that have to do with selling merchandise for a company. Most LeBron commercials of the past I hated and would not buy those products. Now I admit I like Shaq or Barkley commercials because of something called personality. Hmmm, should I go buy some Gold Bond powder? Durant commercials not so much. He sells light bulb changers and Gutter leaf cleaners? They take an NBA player and shove him into a commercial like a mannequin and that is supposed to get me to buy their product, I don’t think so. I feel the same about Blake or CP3 commercials, talk about dumb. Cliff has more personality then the other two combined?

I think LeBron earned his MVP but not being a commercial pitchman. What is it about his personality I am to like? Don’t like the guy but love his game. That is what Magic does not get, and what many companies do not get using sports mannequins for pitchmen. If he sold product the companies never would have abandoned him in the first place. I mean he use to do commercials with his whole family.

Lakers vs Thunder 1/27/2013 Commentary

Kobe “Magic” Johnson or Earvin “Magic” Bryant or Kobe “The Show Be” Bryant
The Lakers just beat the Thunder at Staples Center.  NBA.com link

First time this season I have a smile on my face watching a Lakers game.  Beating Utah a couple nights ago, so what.  Kobe having a great game at Utah, so what!  Can they do it again?  Lakers beating the Thunder with Kobe playing great, again, WOO-HOO!

I can’t believe Kobe has been given that Twilight Zone elixir as Earvin “Magic” Bryant, the fastest assists in the West.  Or was it aliens visiting the earth to do an experiment and give Kobe temporary powers.  Can this continue – I hope so.  Do I love it, YES, I LOVE IT!

I can’t remember a time when Kobe had two games in a row with 10 assists or more.  If he did it was no more than twice but I doubt he has ever done it.  Something to find out?

I am going to say it.  If the Lakers continue to play like this they will make it into the playoffs.  Current record is 19-25.  If they lose 16 more games they are not in the playoffs 41-41.  They can only lose 13 to have a chance at the last seed maybe with a record of 44-38, to guarantee playoffs and show they have a chance at winning they can lose only 7 more games and finish with a record of 50-32, that may get the 4th seed.

Kobe’s efficiency (37) was almost as good as combined Durant (20) and Westbrook (19.)  If Kobe continues to play like this he should be considered for Regular Season MVP, especially if they make it into the playoffs.

I can’t even curse D’Antoni after this game, and biting my tongue (OUCH!) may even have to give him some credit.

Again, nice to have a smile on my face the first time this season.

Who is the All-Time best NBA Player?

Earvin “Magic” Johnson is the greatest player of all time?  He is the best team player of all time and Basketball in a team sport?  He changed the sport from the Wild World of Sports motto “thrill of victory to the agony of defeat” into two plus hours of entertainment.  It changed from an 11:30PM playoff telecast to primetime.  He understood the game better than any coach or player before he entered the NBA.  I had been watching and playing basketball for 15 years before I saw Magic play.  In that very first game when Kareem won it with a Skyhook I watched, jaw dropped for the entire game.  Why, I never saw anyone play the game where everything he did took advantage of the opponent’s weaknesses.  Magic getting a rebound, running ahead of opponents on the court, and making no-look passes created mismatches and advantages.  Still not done today by anyone, I hoped someone could have learned from him.  Jason Kidd was the closest.

My second best NBA player of all time is Larry Bird.  After these it is your call.  Many might say Michael Jordan is the best player.  I will tell you why not.  When Michael Jordan came into the NBA he definitely showed he was a great player.  In his second season after coming back from injury I watched his 63 point playoff game against the Celtics, Wow! Yet he still did not win anything.

He had a nemesis in the 80’s.  No it was not Magic Johnson.  No it was not Larry Bird, although his Celtics kept him from advancing in the East.  His nemesis was that he did not know how to win.  He had to learn how to win.  Magic and Bird knew how to win as rookies.  Michael did not.  M.J. meandered in his first six NBA years without a championship.  He was a great one-on-one player but not a team player.

Of course, it did not help either that the two greatest teams in NBA history also played in the 80’s.  Yes the 80’s Lakers or Celtics teams would have beat the 60’s
Celtics.  Further it did not help that the Philadelphia 76ers and Detroit Pistons also were great teams.  If the great Boston or Lakers team did not play the other three they would have had at least 8 championship paling Jordan’s six.

On Michael Jordan’s team an assistant coach got promoted to head coach, Phil Jackson.  Phil implements a new way of playing the game using Tex Winter’s “The Triangle.”  Michael Jordan did not like it and even asked Phil to scrap it.  He did not understand the discipline it forced upon the players to stay in position.  Position, spacing is everything in basketball to insure an easy shot, increasing your teams shooting percentage, and maximizing winning opportunities.  Jordan got it and they won.

Phil Jackson, the greatest coach in NBA history taught Michael and teammates how to win a championship.  If Phil never came to the Bulls and went to some other team Jordan would be lucky to get one.

It is very clear to me today that LeBron James is the most gifted basketball player of all-time yet he will not win anything without the proper coach to guide him, and the most important factor behind the scenes is the organization to put all the pieces in place.  LeBron James is often compared to the previously most gifted player of the sixties who did not win a championship until his retirement year, Oscar Robertson.

Besides having the best coach in the NBA, Michael Jordan also had the luxury of no great competition. Probably the best competition the Houston Rockets they did not
meet.  The next best team the Utah Jazz is not in the conversation for great teams. Magic and Bird also had it more difficult in the 80’s because of the competition.  Not one team the Bulls faced in the 90’s was the caliber of the Lakers, Celtics, 76ers, or Pistons.  These teams were together for years and were perennial conference and finals contenders.

If Michael did not take the years off he did, he may have won 8 or 9 championships in the 90’s.  Again, Phil Jackson made them clearly the best in the 90’s.  Phil taught Michael how to win and he had excellent team mates, especially Scottie Pippen.

It is a team sport and no one does it alone so TEAM players are at a premium.  The statement that Kobe has not won a championship without Shaq, or now Gasol is non-sense.  You need 5 guys or forget it.  Karl Malone got injured so the Lakers championship went poof against the Pistons in 2004, among other factors.  You need five plus to win, Magic, Russell, Bird and Jordan won nothing alone.  No player in NBA history won it alone!

When Phil Jackson came to the Lakers there were two pretty great players lumbering along leaving fans wondering if they would win.  Shaq and Kobe had 3 years together and nothing.  We don’t know as Kobe’s exponential learning curve climbed that a championship may have been on the horizon especially with two such great players.  Phil Jackson showed up, taught them the triangle, and won a championship in his first year and 2 more.  Phil taught Kobe and Shaq how to win as he did MJ and Scottie.  Watching the Bulls win championships in the 90’s I thought they had the talent so they won.  I did not give Phil Jackson any credit.  I now know after seeing how he turned around the Lakers that Phil is the best.  Talent is not enough.  The 1977 76er’s probably had more talent then any team in NBA history yet lost to Portland.

Magic and Bird came into the game understanding it at a micro level bringing enthusiasm to their team mates.  It was most beautiful to watch.  They made the big play regardless of the form it took: shots, assists, steals, blocks and their defense.  It was amazing how well Magic saw the court on the defensive end having a hand in deflecting passes because he saw the lanes so well and how Bird made the great passes before landing on the ground from a rebound.  When they played it was always about team.  It did not matter who scored so long as it was an easy score.  It was all about being in the best possible condition and the best preparation so the victory required the least amount of effort.  One NBA season in many games Magic did not need to play in the fourth quarter because the opponent was soundly beaten at third quarters end.  Magic and Bird understood the game at a level beyond Phil Jackson.  There play forced teammates to be in position.

Magic played the game with a passion and joy unlike any other player ever.  The best smile in all sports.  He worked harder on every play during the game than any other player in NBA history.  He rebounded, fast-breaked down court, and each opponent he moved ahead of increased the offensive advantage.  The effort in doing this every play amazed me.  His three-quarter-court over-the-shoulder behind-his-back no-look pass in the NCAA Championship game was a taste of things to come.  He invented the “no-look” pass.  Do not listen to these foolish announcers around the league calling a “look-away” pass a “no-look.”

In the eighties the Forum was filled with celebrities because it was the best show in town.  The game was not only about winning or loosing it was seeing the passes that made the crowd go WOW!  Jordan and Kobe amaze me with the insane physical feats they can perform and when they did you said wow.  Jordan’s great playoff shots over a falling down defensive opponent paled in comparison to Magic’s hook shot over the outstretched arms of McHale and Parish.  The anticipation with Magic occurred every time he ran down court.  Pay attention, oh you missed it.

The eighties was the best era in NBA basketball.  It had the best competition.  It had the greatest NBA Finals of all time.  Magic and Bird brought a complete package to the NBA and raised the level of their teams play and raised the level of NBA play.  How many championships would Magic or Bird have won if uncontested like the Bull’s if they played in the 90’s, probably 10 for either?  Magic and his team mates’ even exorcised the Leprechauns from the Old Boston Garden’s slaughtering the Celtic mystique.  It is not so much that the most physically gifted player is the best but who is the biggest gift to a team.  Earvin “Magic” Johnson was that gift to the NBA who no longer plays pro-ball but every Magic basketball fan yearns for a second coming.  There are many great players since Magic but none makes the game two plus hours of entertainment, SHOWTIME!
